Dial2Do

After speaking to Ivan McDonald about Dial2Do at CTIA, I was really anxious to try their service. I logged on as soon as I returned home. After about 10 days I received my invitation to join the closed beta.

Looking forward to comparing Dial2Do with Jott, I started adding contacts. Any time I can import contacts, I’m happy, and being able to import my entire address book and then check off the ones I actually wanted to use in Dial2Do made me very happy!

If you recall, my only real disappointment with Jott was not being able to choose between sending an SMS or email to a contact, and this is a feature offered by Dial2Do. I immediately called the assigned number for Dial2Do and when prompted, proudly stated “text!” “Who do you want to text?” I decided to send mytreo.net’s Lizzrd my inaugural SMS. It worked!

Unfortunately, it was the only thing I’ve done successfully with Dial2Do. The speech recognition engine doesn’t seem ready for prime time quite yet.

At dinner the other night, sitting across the table from my friend Paul, I decided to test speech recognition. At the “Who do you want to text” prompt, I stated Paul’s full name. In fairness, his French last name is a tough target, but the first name should have been simple.

“You want to call ‘MOM,’ is that right?” Dial2Do responded. In my opinion, “Mom” doesn’t sound a bit like “Paul” especially considering I’d included the last name with Paul and Mom was a single word contact. So I tried again stating Paul’s full name. It responded, “You want to call ‘Scotty,’ is that right?” Once again, “Paul” sounds nothing like “Scotty.” Two more tries, and the only matches Dial2Do came up with were another hit on “Mom ” and one for “Dad.” Somehow Dad got a blank text message from me saying only “Dial2Do.”

One more test. Since it obviously recognized the “Mom” entry, I tried to send Mom a text message. She never got it. Maybe when Dial2Do comes out of beta it will have improved, but in the meanwhile, I’m sticking to Jott.

  1. Dial2Do is not just for Moms, honestly :) …

Ivan here from Dial2Do with a quick update and hopefully some reassurance!

Dial2Do has no problem recognising a ‘Paul’, with the tricky French name :), from a ‘Mom’ even in noisy and challenging environments, as long as they are both in your Dial2Do contact book. Honest!

Dial2Do has a contact book that lets you import or enter your contacts’ emails/phone numbers so you can message them with your voice. A contact must be in there in order to be recognised and for some reason ‘Paul’ wasn’t there and thats why the phone service didnt know about him. (We’ll look in case there is a malign/our fault reason he wasnt there).

    Thanks again.

  2. I still contend that, since this SW is the work of Irish genius, speaking in a lovely Irish brogue should solve the voice recognition issue.

  3. Well I have made some progress with Dial2Do. As long as I set up the contacts individually (and don’t try to export from Outlook), it works much better. However, sms to Sprint are not going through for some unknown reason. :(

  4. Hi All Received my beta invite today and WOW I’m blown away Once configured with contacts it’s childs play to use Fantastic to be able to text/email whilst driving and remaining “within the law” Voice recognition for Queens English seems excellent so far
