Treo rumors

The blogosphere is alive today with rumors about a September 12th European launch date for Palm's Centro. The rumor stems from the suggestive wording of a contest posted on Palm's European website.

"The new Palm smartphone.... Sign up now and you'll be the first to know all about the latest cool phone from Palm on 12th September 2007. Not only that, you'll automatically be in with a chance to win five of the brilliant new Palm smartphones. That's one for you and the other four for your friends, family, colleagues or whomever you want to impress."

An apparently official Sprint branded Palm Centro image was leaked to David Ciccone of Mobility Today. It is the first high quality Centro image to surface in the blogosphere.

We are pleasantly surprised by the attractiveness of the photo. Previously leaked blurry images did not represent the device as well. The Centro may indeed be an ideal balance between function and small form factor for consumers interested in a "bite-sized" convergent device.

What's in a name? When it comes to the code "Gandolf" Palm is rumored to have chosen for its upcoming device, perhaps a lot.

Unauthorized images of the device circulated the web this weekend. The form factor is miniature compared with currently available Treo smartphones. Yet the device has features of larger devices, including a touch screen, camera and qwerty thumb-board, this time with sparkling translucent keys.

The blogosphere is alive today with rumors about an impending Treo 800w release. According to several sources on the net, Verizon will be releasing the Windows Mobile 6 device around September 13. It's said to be a substantial improvement over the Treo 700w, and some are suggesting it may even have built-in WiFi, a first for Palm.

Images surfaced this week purportedly of an upcoming Palm OS Treo 755p. The device appears with a white Sprint logo on a navy blue rubberized outer shell. It's pictured with the Palm operating system, and said to support EVDO high speed data transfer rates. Sprints' EVDO network has the fastest data transfer rates of any mobile network in the United States.

Rumors were rampant that Motorola or Nokia would close a deal to buy Palm last week, in a deal bloggers anticipated would close around the time of Palm's quarterly earnings announcement and prior to CTIA. Palm, Nokia and Motorola all saw their share prices roller coaster as a result.

This week Motorola canceled its keynote address at CTIA without explanation. Showroom floor scuttlebutt is that Motorola is occupied with buyout talks.

Unstrung is reporting that a deal for rival cell phone manufacturer Nokia to buy out Palm may be in the final stretch. According to the technology website, the deal could happen as early as Thursday this week at more than $20 per share.

Our good friends at PalmAddicts noticed pictures on mobilitysite of what looks like a Treo 750 running Windows Mobile 6 beta. If these are valid pictures and not photoshop goofs, could there be an exciting software update coming? Does this mean a new model number with new hardware specifications?

Ed Colligan, one of the original Treo visionaries and current CEO of Palm, revealed on last week's invesetor relations conference call that Palm will be releasing a low-priced Treo by the end of the year. While Mr. Colligan gave little information about the upcoming device, he confirmed it would have a keyboard and a touch screen. He said that the Treo 750v released in Europe (available October 2nd in the UK) was the third of four models being released this year. Colligan also stated that he expects the upcoming Treo to be offered worldwide by more than 20 carrier partners. (Update: on September 28, the Treo 750v was announced in Asia as well.
