Palm is clearly very good at carrier relations. Palm smartphones that start out popular in America and Europe quickly spread to carriers throughout those continents and elsewhere in the world.

Recently, Palm announced significant new carrier deployments of the Centro smartphone. StarHub Mobile is rolling out the device in Singapore, and Telcel and Movistar are releasing the phone in Mexico. The Centro is being rolled out in Mexico in blue, a new color.

Is Palm's upcoming Sprint GPS & WiFi Treo 800w a winner?

Posted by webmaster at 09:00 PM
800wleakedimage.JPG

According to the a number of community sites, a road show slide indicating Sprint will release a GPS & WiFi enabled Palm Treo 800w in July with a front facing qwerty keyboard was leaked. So we called Palm Friday. They would neither confirm nor deny the rumor. But we left the call with the distinct impression the company is returning to a more normal high end release schedule shortly.

We believe the rumored Treo 800w for Sprint may be an important product for Palm at a time the company's revenues have been declining. Palm's core customer base, well over a million "early adopters," have been pining for an upgrade, especially as competing manufacturers have advanced their product lines.

Free smartphone e-greetings using Clip In Touch.

clipintouchlogo.JPG

Clip In Touch is a service being rolled out by carriers (and other content providers) that allows users to send greetings to multi-media enabled mobile phones for free. Simply design a greeting using your desktop or Treo / Centro browser and the Clip In Touch site, and send it to anyone or everyone you know via e-mail or MMS. Clip In Touch offers a database of professional images, videos and music that can be combined to create greetings, or you can upload your own multimedia files (such as photographs, songs or your own recordings).

We caught up with the company last month and received an in-person demonstration. They showed us how to create a greeting and what a resulting MMS looks like on a mobile phone. The service is a lot of fun for sending joke messages to friends or for sending well wishes to loved ones on holidays.

Will Palm implement haptic response to on-screen key presses? Immersion Corporation interviewed.

immersionlogo.gif

One of the most important choices smartphone manufacturers make in designing a device is screen versus keyboard size. Larger screens tend to correspond with smaller front facing keyboards or slide out ones. Few smartphones have both large screens and large front facing keyboards because the combination of both makes for an unappealingly large product.

Last year Apple popularized the concept of virtual on-screen keyboards with the iPhone. More screen real estate is possible with this approach. But Apple's on-screen keyboard has a major drawback. It lacks "haptic response." You cannot feel the keys the way you can on a physical keyboard. There is no pressure back on the finger when a virtual key is released.
