Verizon update

On July 1, Palm released an update for the Verizon Treo 755p. According to Palm, version 1.08 firmware “is a tune-up that improves the phone application, stability and device usability.” As usual, the update is available in two formats – a HotSync install method for Windows users and an SD card install method for both Windows and Mac users. For the SD card install method, Palm warns against using a microSD card with a miniSD adapter due to reliability concerns. The update will take about 45 minutes to complete, and after performing the update, you will need to reprogram your phone. An AC adapter is required to install the update.

Here are recommended methods for installing the update:

HotSync Method

1. HotSync to back up your data.
2. Hard reset your device and create a new temporary HotSync user ID.
3. Run the installer on your computer and HotSync using the temporary user account.
4. After the update is completed, HotSync using your original user account to restore your data.
5. Dial *228 and select option 1, and when that completes, dial *228 again and select option 2.

SD Card Install Method

1. If you have a spare miniSD card, skip to step 3.
2. Move your data from your card to your computer.
3. Copy the files in the Verizon folder of the ZIP file to your card.
4. HotSync your device to back up your data and perform a hard reset.
5. Insert your card and the updater will start automatically.
6. After the update is completed, HotSync to restore your data.
7. Dial *228 and select option 1, and when that completes, dial *228 again and select option 2.

Palm gave no specifics on the reason for this update, or what it’s supposed to accomplish. Subscribe to the thread in the 755 forum to find out if anyone is noticing any improvements or differences after the update. Please let us know what you find after the update.

Special thanks to Robin24k for the instructions.

  1. The instructions are needlessly complex. I upgraded my and my wife’s Treos simply by backing up the device to the memory card (Resco Backup for mine, NVBackup for hers), running the upgrader from the desktop of the PC, and restoring the backup when finished.

There is no need to create any sort of temporary HotSync ID. Just backup the files before you start. The installer performs a hard reset as part of its procedure.

That’s my experience, and it worked without any problem at all. Total time for the upgrade, about 34 minutes for each.

  2. Why are you dialing *228 twice? Doing it the first time *228 option 1 should automagically send the PRL (which is what *228 option 2 sends).

  3. “Palm gave no specifics on the reason for this update, or what it’s supposed to accomplish. ”

Sounds like most of what has been coming out of Palm the last few years….

At a minimum, I’ll bet they didn’t waste any time adding “MyLocation” APIs, updating to the lastest Googlemaps, Docs to Go, PocketTunes, etc - better to waste 10MB of precious RAM duplicating the ROM files there.

G_d forbid Palm do ANYTHING to support their current customers beyond a “tune-up that improves the phone application, stability and device usability.” (in other words, stuff they should have fixed before releasing it).

  4. You don’t have to dial *228 twice, but option 1 does not send the current PRL, it only adds the phone to the Verizon network. You can dial *22899, however, which is the same as choosing both options 1 and 2 in the same call. If you don’t do that, it is necessary to dial *228 twice.

  5. has anyone hacked this (or previous) 755p updates to work on a Verizon 700p? I know people have done this on Sprint, but I’ve never seen any discussion of doing it on Verizon.
