Palm is clearly very good at carrier relations. Palm smartphones that start out popular in America and Europe quickly spread to carriers throughout those continents and elsewhere in the world.

Recently, Palm announced significant new carrier deployments of the Centro smartphone. StarHub Mobile is rolling out the device in Singapore, and Telcel and Movistar are releasing the phone in Mexico. The Centro is being rolled out in Mexico in blue, a new color.

Press Release

SINGAPORE, Apr 07, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq:PALM) today announced the Palm(R) Centro(TM) smartphone is now available to StarHub mobile customers in Singapore, making its trademark ease of use accessible for even more customers who want to stay connected with friends, family and co-workers.

"Over a million units of the Palm Centro have been sold, and its already-rapid momentum is set to grow globally," said Olivier Rozay, Palm's regional director for Asia Pacific. "Working with StarHub, we are confident that even more feature-phone upgraders will soon discover why Centro has become so popular. A superior phone that incorporates a touch screen and a full QWERTY keyboard, Centro is a smart and feature-packed value."

Besides being compact, fun and stylish, Centro is an excellent choice for first-time smartphone users who are looking to better manage their lives - be it work or meeting up with friends. Centro helps users manage email and text messaging, keep track of their schedules, stay up-to-date on the latest news, and capture and share pictures. With additional features such as a built-in Google Maps application to quickly access maps or directions, and support for up to eight email accounts(1), Centro provides users with a unique mobile experience.

"We are delighted to work with Palm in bringing the exciting Palm Centro to our mobile customers in Singapore," said Philip Tan, StarHub's Head of Consumer Sales, Customer Experience and Technical Services. "With its advanced mobile features and attractive price point, the Palm Centro complements well our existing demographic base of young and trendy mobile road warriors."

Additional Palm Centro Features and Benefits

  • Superior Phone - Centro's touch screen and full QWERTY keyboard, combined with the simplicity of Palm OS(R), make it easy to use, with key features such as one-touch speakerphone, conference calling, ignore a call with text messaging and Bluetooth(R) connectivity.

  • Easy Messaging - Centro's full keyboard makes typing complete messages fast and easy when sending text, pictures, audio and video clips. Plus, Centro keeps all conversations in a chat-style view, just like Instant Messaging, so users can see the entire conversation unfold.

  • Personal and Work Email - New users to the smartphone category now have an easy mobile email solution. Personal email, such as Gmail and Yahoo!, is simple to access right out of the box. And, if users have to check their work email, Microsoft Direct Push Technology gives users access to their corporate email, as well as the ability to automatically update work calendars and accept or decline meeting invites, all on the go.

  • Web Browsing - The full keyboard and touch screen provide quick access to online information and allow users to directly feed their personal blogs. The built-in Google Maps application offers fast access to maps, directions and local searches.

  • Multimedia - Pocket Tunes on Centro lets users "sideload" songs and manage music, audio books and videos easily. Users can also shoot pictures or videos with the built-in digital camera and share them with friends.

Well I don't see palm cutting any deals with Indian carriers though. That's probably the reason behind very low awareness about a great phone like Centro. They just launched Unlocked GSM version of Centro in India. It comes only in a single color. Beside that they don't have deal with any CDMA or GSM carrier here. I believe Centro is a great phone and can become very popular if Palm promotes it properly in India. I fail to understand why Palm does not realise that India is one of the biggest market for mobile phones.
