or Thought we pushed the envelope with a "Romance, sex and Treo Smartphone" podcast? Palm and AT&T are announcing a pick-up line contest.
(We aren't making this up.)
Submit the worst, funniest or best pick-up line you’ve heard (or delivered) at palmpickup.com April 5 - May 17 and be entered in a daily drawing to win a free Palm Centro smartphone. Vote and post comments, or entice your friends to do so and if your line rakes in enough appeal, you’ll also have a chance to win a Royal Caribbean cruise.
Just for registering, you are eligible for the grand prize-- a VIP party in Las Vegas for you and five friends. You’ll also have the option to receive a weekly text, about the top picks of the week, ensuring your “game” at the next party.

Chuck Lawhorn says:
This obsession with pickup lines and bars is only making MTDN a laughing stock. It's foolish and beneath you. At least, it should be.
Alli says:
I guess you missed the fact that this contest has absolutely nothing to do with mtdn. So it's neither foolish nor beneath us.
I don't find it foolish or beneath either Palm or AT&T though. Perhaps they were impressed with the reactions (both negative and positive) caused by our recent podcasts.

I was waiting for Chuck to weigh in. :-)

The fact that Palm (and AT&T) would roll out a ridiculous promotion like this is confirmation of the idiocy ruling those companies about their target market for "high end" smartphones.
It's a stupid, frigin' phone grafted into a circa-2001 PDA operating system - are the "swinging chicks" and "happening dudes" they are targeting really hooking up because of the stupid device they carry?
AT&T has more monopoly money than god now, so I guess they can carry on with whatever stupid promotions their college interns think would be fun to do - probably the same group that think the continual "spring break" softcore porn on the E! and FOX networks is "news."
But Palm seems to be in pretty bad shape and without a heck of a lot of innovation going on since acquiring the Treo from Handspring 5 years ago (thus saving Palm from wreck then). Hopefully AT&T is footing the bill for this silliness and Palm is going along with it because "there's no such thing as bad publicity."
VEGAS BABY YEAH!!! Syncing up a Centro and that's exactly what comes to mind, "swinger." Lock up the idiots creating these promotions and put the money into R&D where it's been sorely lacking for years.
rosenft says:
Palm's marketing department is doing something right. The company is moving 830 thousand Centro units per quarter, the highest sell through rate of any phone in the history of the company.
jteesy says:
The Centro isn't BEING marketed as a "high end" smartphone, it is specifically being pushed as a smartphone for the masses (even if it is a repackaged 755p). I know there are as many opinions as there are people, so here's one more: no matter how intelligent or "above this type of behavior" anyone thinks they are, they are almost certainly able to live, breath, and complain about these dating-related stories because someone....many years ago...used a pick-up line on someone else and eventually conceived them.
It's not that serious. If the story doesn't interest you, don't bother getting aggravated by it? Sex and romance permeate every aspect of life, and telecommunications is no different. Almost every date I have made in the the past half decade have involved using whatever version of Treo I had at the time. Would anyone be complaining if the promotion involved submitting best/worst/funniest excuse to get out of work? I doubt it. I believe their intent is simply to have fun. Wow...imagine that...
Alli says:
What surprising common sense, jteesy. Wanna get together for a cup of coffee some time? I could show you my Centro.
;)
