Every once in a while technologies converge in a way that seems magical.

Eye-Fi Cards are memory cards for photographers that automatically transmit images via WiFi. Simply take photos, store them on an Eye-Fi card, and the card will transfer them to your computer when it detects your home wireless network. Eye-Fi cards are also designed to automatically interact with Facebook, Kodak, Photobucket and TypePad, among other popular sites.

Eye-Fi cards work with virtually all cameras that accept SD cards, and require continuous power to transfer images via WiFi. Smartphones do not provide continuous power -- but only power the card when it's being accessed. More work must be done in order to make Eye-Fi compatible with Treo smartphones as a result.

Eye-Fi Cards accept full-resolution JPEGs and intelligently re-sizes photos when necessary for social networking websites. They are available with 2 gigabtyes of storage and have 45 to 90 feet of range depending on environment. The manufacturer suggested retail price is $99.

We caught up with the CEO of of the company. Check out our exclusive video interview!

Now, if they could only use a wi-fi card with the 650. Now that would be magical.

...or shrink them down to a MiniSD or a MicroSD or whatever flash format Palm decides to foist upon us with their next device. Having released "smartphone" devices with 3 different flash formats within about a year hasn't really been a good move for the usability of Palm devices, and now as these innovative SDIO cards multiply we're stuck waiting several more years until they can be further miniaturized.

When Palm chose SD over CF it cut off a lot of expansion possibilitie. Now, years later the SD has finally caught up - but Palm's messed up and gone to TWO new formats that haven't matured to the point that SD has...

Clever and interesting for some digital camera owners perhaps, but it's difficult to see how it ties in to the Treo, other than the card form factor.

The Treo can already wirelessly transmit photos via MMS, email and Bluetooth. I can take a photo, title it, describe it, tag it and upload it to Flickr within a matter of seconds, as long as I'm somewhere with data service. It's a convergence of technologies that verges on magical :)

well, while watching the video all i thought was "Oh man, Wi-fi for palms"

and it is true. if palm is to take even those same drivers it had with the palmwifi card, and simply, condense the card to even and SD size for now, i think it would bring that much needed boost to Palm for 2008.

And where are the really good apps which are popular enough for VOIP and Treo? They're all Java-based, and Access/Palm doesn't give a d**n about offering something robust. The IBM implementation crashes my system every time I attempt an install.

As much as I love my Treo, I will never buy another Palm product without Java integration.
