or Sony recently released a second generation personal communication device called Mylo. Designed to compete with Palm's Centro in the youth market, Mylo has a WiFi and no cellular antenna. Therefore, no service contract is necessary to buy and use the device. Mylo comes ready for use with a variety of social networking, instant messaging, and other online services, including Skype.
This week at the CES consumer electronics convention, we caught up with Philip Boyle, Sony's Product Manager for Mylo. Mr. Boyle is responsible for marketing Mylo in the United States, and is involved with Sony's technical team in conceiving the product's specifications. Mylo's success depends largely on decisions made by him.

If it's got no cellular antenna, how on earth can it compete with the Centro?

Given its specs, it seems more like a rival to the iPod Touch than the Centro.
rosenft says:
It's competing for the same dollars. Probably you'll use one or the other but not both.
I agree the Centro is a much more compelling offering. But some kids may not be able to convince their parents to enter into a cellular service contract for them. There is no unlocked Centro on the market yet.

After the (on-going) nightmare of dealing with sprint, I'd seriously consider switching to a skype device. I'd be a bit of a pain to only have coverage in WiFi areas, but I did actually survive over 20 years without a cell phone...
