If you enjoy physical activities where you get dirty and or wet, the AQUAPAC Aqua-100 Waterproof case is great way to protect your Treo from the elements as you take it with you on adventures.

How It Works

The AQUAPAC is a 100% waterproof case guaranteed up to a depth of 15 feet. To insert your Treo into the case, just rotate the two levers to open the case, slide your Treo inside and then seal it up by rotating the two levers back to the horizontal position. The levers “click” when in the locked position so you know when they are fully engaged.

The bottom edges of the clamp sides have a groove and ridge that interlock, squeezing the plastic case tightly between them to form a waterproof seal as shown.

Based on some “dunk testing” in my sink, I found that my Treo would float quite easily on the surface of the water. If you are into any boating sports such as sailing, waterskiing or fishing, it is good to know that you don’t have to worry about your phone sinking to the bottom of the lake or ocean it if falls overboard. After repeated dunking and even some mild squeezing of the case while underwater I didn’t see any air bubbles escaping. In short, the AQUAPAC did a great job of keeping the air in and the water out.

The AQUAPAC Aqua-100 is designed for small phones and is a fairly snug fit for the Treo 700. A bare Treo 700 slides in and out of the AQUAPAC, but you may need to give it a slight push or pull. I’m guessing that the slightly smaller Treo 680 or 755p might be a bit easier to insert and remove. However, I found that when I had a super-thin skin on my Treo (like the ones from www.bestskinsever.com or www.shieldzone.com) it was very difficult to insert and remove my Treo from the AQUAPAC case because the plastic of skin would stick to the plastic of the case.

The front of the case is clear plastic and the back of the case is an opaque blue padded plastic material that provides a bit of extra protection for the back side of your Treo.

A great feature is that you can use your Treo while it is in the AQUAPAC with minimal loss of functionality. I had no problem using the keyboard or buttons on the Treo and while you can’t easily remove your stylus if it is still in the case, it is easy enough to use your finger on the touch screen. The side volume buttons of the Treo were covered by the side seam of the AQUAPAC case so it was a bit difficult to find the buttons just by feeling for them, but it was still easy enough to press the side buttons if you needed to change the volume.

The front of the Treo and the screen are easily legible through the front of the AQUAPAC, but I was somewhat annoyed by the fact that the AQUAPAC text on the bottom right edge of the case overlapped the right side of the Treo’s keyboard, making it difficult to see the keys underneath. It’s not a big deal, but I find it annoying when product branding intrudes on usability and would like to see future versions of the case without the branding text on the front.

The only real limitation I found with the case was that the volume levels of the speakers and microphone were somewhat reduced when the Treo was in the AQUAPAC. This was most apparent when using the back speakerphone where I would estimate the volume of the speaker was reduced by approximately 30% (just a rough estimate)…probably about the same as if you lay the back of the Treo on a table. The earpiece speaker was slightly reduced as was the microphone sensitivity, which lowers the volume of your voice as heard by the person you are talking to. But in both instances, the difference in volume could easily be overcome by turning up the earpiece volume or talking a bit louder.

Depending on your needs, the AQUAPAC also comes in additional styles such as the AQUAPAC Aqua-340 PDA Case and the AQUAPAC Aqua-206 Waterproof Pro Sports Case which you can strap to your arm or leg. One of the nice features of the AQUAPAC Aqua-340 is that it has a place to hold your stylus on the outside of the case.

Conclusion

The AQUAPAC is a relatively inexpensive case that will let you take your Treo to the beach, in the ocean or out on the lake while making sure it is safe from the elements. The case is made out of durable plastic and forms a waterproof seal that will not only protect your Treo from the water but will also keep it afloat if you drop it overboard.

Pros

  • Protects your Treo from the elements
  • Keeps your Treo afloat if it falls overboard
  • Foam padding on back provides extra protection
  • Comes with neck cord and carabiner

Cons

  • Slight reduction in sound volumes when your Treo is in the case
  • A bit bulkier that it needs to be because it isn’t custom-shaped for the Treo

Looks like another item to add to the Con list is that you can't take pictures using your Treo's camera when inside this case. I like to take pictures while kayaking and it's pretty dangerous to take the Treo out of the case while on the water.

I bought this same model a couple years ago at REI - and while I agree that it would have been great to have optically clear plastic on the back, the cushioning/floating material is probably a better choice overall. The Treo camera is so lousy WITHOUT anything in front of the lens unless you are using Kleig lights - it can only get worse with a piece of thick plastic in front of it.

REI sells a cheap ($15?) Chinese-made enclosure made of optically clear plastic that would probably accomodate the Treo just fine if you were really interested in trying to use the Treo cam kayaking. I tried it out snorkling with my Powershot and it worked really well (a few droplets inside but that's it).
