When it comes to file management, all I can say is "wow." Resco has put together everything you can think of in one tight little package, and just like its Windows counterpart, Resco Explorer allows you total access to your files.

At first glance, Explorer is daunting. The learning curve is steep, and this really is not an app for novices. Unless you already really know what you're doing, or are both willing to learn and not afraid of incurring such a catastrophe that you'll have to perform a hard reset, I would stick to FileZ on your Palm os device.

With that in mind, I'd like to take a look at Resco Explorer, and just what it can do for you. It is also important to point out that Resco products are available for both the Palm and WM operating systems, so whichever flavor Treo you prefer, you can use Resco Explorer.

At the heart of Explorer is a basic file manager. You can view your files in either a tree or traditional list view.

Whichever way you prefer to view your files, you can manipulate them much as you can files on your desktop. You can view or change their attributes, copy or delete them, drag/drop them to another directory, or send them to someone else. Setting file associations is also a simple task for Explorer.

All of this can be done one-handed via the 5-way nav pad. This is a Treo Power user's dream! And this is only the beginning.

One of the features I like best about Explorer is the compression tool. Not only does it allow you to unzip files you've downloaded or stored on your expansion card, but it allows you to use zipped folder as though they were regular (uncompressed!) folders. This means that although an application is compressed, you can still launch it from within Resco Explorer. Another fantastic option is being able to password protect your zipped files.

Not quite as spectacular, but still incredibly useful, Explorer can act as your launcher. One of the advantages of using Explorer as a launcher is that it will launch apps in RAM or SD, zipped apps, and documents.

Although Resco Backup is one of the most versatile backup applications available for Palm os, Explorer includes a backup feature. More of a backup "lite" it still offers you the confidence that comes from backing up your Palm device. You have a choice between full and incremental backups and the ability to delete the old backup (to save space) when you perform your new backup. This is by no means the ultimate backup solution, but it is definitely better than no backup!

As Resco has a stand alone backup product, it also has an extremely nice photo viewer. Nonetheless, Explorer has also included an image viewer. Tap on a .jpg file, and it will open up so that you can see the image without needing to leave Explorer.

Now we're getting to the part where Resco Explorer blows away every other file management product. Explorer can be used on most LAN/VPN networks. If you have network access, you can explore the directories across a network using Explorer. Resco does a reasonable job of explaining the various options on its website. The English is a little stilted, but it's understandable.

Not only can you access your LAN drives when you're in the office and connected, but you can ftp files when you're away. Resco Explorer is truly one of the tools that will allow you to leave your laptop behind when you're on the road.

The final feature I'd like to address is an alarm and notification utility similar to that of PalmInternals.

If you discover your Treo is turning on unexpectedly, you can check Alarms to see what application caused it. Ever which apps you need to lock and which are self locking? Explorer answers those questions for you.

Resco Explorer has replaced numerous small utilities on my Treo. It is one of the most robust and full-featured applications available for Palm os. Try it for yourself for a week and see. You'll be more than happy to part with $29.95 before the end of the trial period.

Thanks Ali for the review - I didn't realize Explorer had 'ftp' capabilities - I'll have to take another look - now if I could find away to edit my webpages on my palm, I could leave the laptop behind (Dragon edit's box to hold the user name doesn't allow for enough character's for me)

Thanks

Great review Alli, I had no idea the program did this much or I'd have checked it out a long time ago. I used the trial to access shares on my corporate network via Bluetooth reverse-DUN, and have decided that buying this will be much cheaper than fixing my old laptop to lug around to meetings. Thanks!
