Palm Introduces Treo 755p for Sprint

SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 09, 2007 — Evolving the Treo product line to keep mobile professionals connected, productive and entertained, Palm, Inc. today introduced the Treo 755p smart device, a new Palm OS Treo for Sprint. The CDMA Treo 755p is the first Treo device to offer built-in Microsoft Direct Push Technology email support; Google Maps for mobile; and the latest Treo design, with integrated antenna, slimmer form factor and mini-SD slot. Sprint is the first carrier selling the next-generation Treo 755p, which is available for as low as $279.99 with a two-year service agreement and a $100 mail-in rebate, and is available starting mid-May in two fashionable colors - midnight blue and burgundy.

The new Treo 755p brings customers quick, wireless access to web, email, business, multimedia applications and instant messaging (IM) for Sprint customers nationwide (standard text and Vision charges apply where applicable). The Treo 755p runs on the Sprint Mobile Broadband Network, the nation’s largest mobile broadband network - reaching more than 206 million people across the country in more than 11,000 cities and 1,000 airports.

“The Treo 755p is a stylish and powerful device ideal for business professionals looking for the power to do more while on the go,” said Danny Bowman, vice president of customer equipment for Sprint. “Building upon the success of the Treo 700p, we’ve added enhancements such as Mobile Voice Control, a new IM application and Sprint TV in the ROM for mobile entertainment and news.”

As the newest member of the Treo family, the Treo 755p smart device combines the sleek, internal antenna hardware design of devices such as the Treo 680 and Treo 750 with Palm’s latest Palm OS software, shipped on millions of Palm OS based Treo devices worldwide. Currently, there are more than 29,000 Palm OS applications commercially available, from healthcare and sales force automation to games and travel. Palm differentiates this smart device from others in the Treo line by offering the following features along with many additional enhancements.

First Palm OS based Treo Device with Built-in Support for Microsoft Direct Push Technology for Email

The Treo 755p offers VersaMail 3.5.4 with built-in Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync support for Microsoft Direct Push Technology that delivers automatic updates to Outlook email. Companies can choose to eliminate costly third-party software and take advantage of their existing Exchange infrastructures. Businesses connected to a Microsoft Exchange Server get fast, automatic wireless updates of email, calendar and contact information with added IT security and remote manageability.

“The new Treo 755p keeps mobile professionals in touch with coworkers and family while managing a variety of communications and information to stay productive and maximize downtime,” said Caitlin Spaan, vice president, carrier marketing, for Palm, Inc. “The fast speeds of the Sprint Mobile Broadband Network and Palm’s hallmark ease of use make viewing rich applications, streaming live music and video as well as using the web an enjoyable experience.”

First Treo Integrating Google Maps for Mobile

Also new to the Treo 755p is the integration of Google Maps service for mobile. With Google Maps built into the ROM, right out of the box, Treo 755p users can get directions; perform local searches; and view moveable/scalable maps, satellite imagery, and traffic updates while on the go.

“By integrating Google Maps for mobile into the Treo 755p, we’re making it even easier for users to get directions, maps, local listings, and traffic updates for wherever life takes them,” said Steve Lee, product manager for Google Inc. “We’re focused on delivering the best possible mobile experience to as many users as possible, and working with innovative companies like Palm helps us do just that.”

Other Treo 755p Features and Benefits

  • Ability to watch mobile video directly on the Treo 755p with Sprint TV, which features more than 50 channels of live and on-demand content, including CNN, FOX, ESPN, The Weather Channel, MTV, E! and The Cartoon Network;

  • Dial-up networking via USB or Bluetooth wireless technology on the Sprint Mobile Broadband Network for using the Treo 755p as a modem for a laptop computer (requires an appropriate service plan);

  1. Aside from not having a small ant. and some small extras to the ROM that can easily be added to a 700p, and the use of miniSD (which to me seems like a downgrade). What reason would a 700p user have to want this device?

Seems almost silly for Palm to have even bothered making it, with such little changes. Heck short of the miniSD and case changes everything else is just a firmware update away.

  2. There is no reason at all a 700p owner would want to downgrade to a 755p.

This is obviously a way Palm can save big bucks in manufacturing by producing the same body for multiple devices.

  3. dude , i am not going to even look at treo , i have 650.. since i don’t even bother to check.. since i don’t hear the word ” WIFI” whts up with palm and the damn WIFI ? ,
i think most of the treo user *now* are retarted , they don’t even know what is wifi , the sales men convenience you EV-DO.. you dont need wifi.. yah sure.. get on ur own home network with ev-do..

only in the US… man long live Europe they actually know what is WIFI means , and the marekt treat the customers as smart people , people by treo to show off with.. thats why palm will never release a wifi.. thanx to the show off..

  4. I had never owned a palm anything prior to my 700p purchase when it came out. so far i’ve been sorely disapointed with it on the sprint network. this 755 won’t change a thing heck they can’t even get the bt stack fixed on the 700. I’m never again going to purchase a palm device. good going palm I now see where your priorities are, making more $. where was our firmware fix for the 700? its still not out regardless.

  5. I just don’t see enough improvement to upgrade from my 700p, which is working fine for me. Has anyone heard any rumors leaked about a model following the 755p?

  8. I still don’t understand the need for WiFi. If I’m home with access to my home network…I’ll use my computer over a 3 inch screen every time. If I’m not home, there either is no WiFi available, or it costs more for one hour than my month of EVDO.

  9. So if no one has anything good to say about the 755p, what phone do all of you consider better (that can be purchased in the US for Sprint)? I’ve had my 600 for 3 years and the only thing I’m missing in my opinion is bt, high res screen and more (nonvolatile) memory. That is why I’m considering upgrading. WIFI would be pointless for me since the only place it would work for sure is at home. The point of EV-DO is to work EVERYWHERE. When 802.16e is rolled out, then we’ll talk “WIFI.” If everyone had free blanketed WIFI in their city, I’d see a point.

  10. I switched from a GSM 650 to get the 700 on Sprint and have not been disappointed. I’d go with the 700p before Palm discontinues them!

  11. [I still don't understand the need for WiFi. If I'm home with access to my home network...I'll use my computer over a 3 inch screen every time. If I'm not home, there either is no WiFi available, or it costs more for one hour than my month of EVDO.]

Alli, user can’t afford a computer so he has to use his Treo to surf the web.

  12. hoop…if he can’t afford a computer how the heck does he have a home network?!

  13. I agree with Alli - why would I want wifi in my Treo when I have EVDO.

I went from a Tungsten C which has wifi to the 700p. I do not miss the wifi at all. The wifi was good at home which I used in bed, but I can do the same with EVDO. The only thing wifi did for me was snoop out networks, however I very rarely was able to use it outside my home. EVDO is much much more useful. If you say it is a speed issue, well the page loads on my 700p are FASTER than the same page on my wifi T|C. The reason most likely is the browser is slightly better on the 700p.

  14. I was anxiously waiting for the 755, because of the many spontaneous resets and other problems that I’ve experienced with my 700P, since I got it in January. I figured that I’d push Sprint to replace my problematic 700P with a “much better” 755, but after reading about it I’m terribly disappointed. Smaller battery= less talk/standby time, still no GPS, no decent built-in voice dial, basically no improvement on the 700P.

Supposedly there are many “happy” Palm Treo users, but I can only imagine that there are many others like myself, that feel terribly let down by Palm, both for problems with their present phones and for having nothing to look forward to.

  15. i can see upgrading from 700p to 755p may not be worth it unless you really don’t like the antenna as much as i do… but if you have 600 and 650 with sprint. it’s a definitelya plus. =) especially for $175!

  16. I think I’ll just wait for the 780 or 800 whichever comes out first.

  17. if any one knows if the 755 works with windows vista for transfering music files because that is my only prob I have or if they know a solution for the 700p I would be grateful

  18. RE: WIFI ********************
ok for those who don’t get it about wifi , and say home net etc.. al this bull.. how about this people..
do i have to take out my SD card every time i need to copy some files from my computer ? or how about a friend’s computer that don’t have Sd slot ?? hum…. evdo will really come on handy copying 20 mb files or more.. humm even better if we are in building the signal suck.. humm.. then what is EV-do will do u ?

the reason of wifi no to surf the web.. thats exactly what i mean when i said most of treo user don’t even know what is a wifi is… meaning what is really being used for… who da heck will surf da web with wifi..
** ITS ALL ABOUT NETWORK people**
getting files from computer uploading fils. home network , friends and work .. NOT every one has Sd card slot.. and what kinda e-mail address will allow you use your precious evdo to receive 50 mb ?

**If u know how to use your treo.. you will find the need of wifi***

  20. Try watching a Cable High-Def DVR IN REAL TIME while in a car going 65 mph down the interstate with WiFi!

I can do this with Sprint Powervision EVDO, a Slingbox and SlingPlayer for Palm on my Treo 700p!

WiFi is fine for static locations, and when I’m home I’ll use a Powerbook or desktop Mac for blazing Airport Wifi speeds, I would not need to use the Treo 700p. As it is, I can use BOTH side by side if I want.

WiFi is NOT universally accessible yet around the U.S., and there are security issues involved even where it is available. The person next to you at Barnes & Noble with the proper equipment could be stealing your passwords, credit card #s, sensitive files, etc.

Also, FREE WiFi hotspots are few and far between, the ones that ARE accessible cost well over $10 a DAY or are similarly expensive for monthly/annual plans, usually even more that your monthly Sprint or Verizon monthly wireless bill!

  22. WiFi would be nice, not a deal-killer for me though. Palm’s having enough trouble just making what they DO have work.

And, it isn’t the “either EVDO or WiFi” straw dog argument above - that’s like arguing you don’t want an AM/FM radio because your favorite yap-jock is only on AM. If you have BOTH radios you only have added flexibility.

  23. The WiFi would be nice but only with the newer 802.1x support. Often out and about and would like to do things that require network access. Currently Juniper doesn’t have a SSL client for palm. They do have one for Window Mobile.

I find the simpler things a bigger issue. Simple voice dialing. This works on other palm OS phones but not Treo.

Access to the internal GPS without hacking garnet.

Fixing some of the garnet issues or moving to Access Linux with Palm Apps support.
