Major New Palm Product Announcement Tomorrow!
Over the past several years, Palm has secretly been developing a new class of product, to add to its existing PDA and smartphone lines. The new category will be announced by Palm founder Jeff Hawkins at a financial conference in California tomorrow.
Why is this so exciting? Because the new “toy” is being brought to us by the same geniuses who developed the original Palm Pilot and convergent smartphone. When the original Palm Pilot was released, data entry was mainly done using handwriting recognition technology, a nascent stage technology. Other early mobile devices like the Apple Newton failed to gain traction because engineers could not train devices to learn millions of variations of individual handwriting styles sufficiently well. Palm taught its users a single style called Graffiti, and in doing so gave us the first truly usable and widely accepted PDA.
The company also made large portions of the operating source code available to the third party development community. So software engineer entrepreneurs were able to write fabulous software for the Palm device. This open architecture approach greatly enhanced the power of Palm Pilots.
A few years later Palm innovated “convergence” by fusing PDA, camera, email, and web browsing functionality into the Treo smartphone. They also added amazingly comfortable qwerty-keyboards to mobile phones, making handwriting recognition unnecessary. The Treo 180 and later the Treo 600 were truly magnificent breakthrough products. Recently a wide array of competing devices from manufactures such as Nokia, Motorola, Samsung and HTC were released. Palm invented such a massively popular approach to mobile computing that some analysts say convergent smartphone devices make up 6% of all mobile phone sales in the United States, and could someday soon reach 30% market penetration.
Will Jeff Hawkins dazzle us again? We wouldn’t be surprised. He has been coy about specifics. But we know from his public statements that the device will be a mobile computer of some variation that takes advantage of high speed data networks. Some bloggers are suggesting that Palm will announce a Linux platform PDA because the company advertised a Linux software coding position recently. We wonder if perhaps Palm is making its first foray into the ultra-mobile PC market.
We believe ultra-portable PCs are going to become a tremendously popular product class because desktop-equivalent processors and mega memory can now be incorporated into tiny form factors. Companies like OQO, Sony and HTC have released first generation products that run Windows XP and Vista with spectacular hardware specifications. However, so far existing products have not been widely adopted because of usability issues, such as uncomfortable keyboards and heavy batteries.
We can only speculate if Palm is bringing Treo-like usability to the ultra-portable PC space, if Palm is releasing a Linux PDA, or it Palm’s founder Jeff Hawkins has an entirely new product in mind. In any case, because Mr. Hawkins is one of the great computer visionaries of all time, and Palm has demonstrated incredible foresight and capability in the area of mobile computing, we are waiting with bated breath to find out.

Awesome!!! Can’t wait!!!
Well golly. Thanks for announcing the announcement.
Next time? More content please. Kthxbye.
I know!!!! Palm, lets get that damn upgrade you promised us 700p long ago, THEN concentrate on new sh**. (It’s a joke more than anything people, so before you start whining at me for me dissing palm consider that). And yes, It sounds like quite a “gadget” and I’m sure I’ll get it, been reading the hints on this things…sounds cool!!!
Faslane Out!

Jeff Hawkins has been dropping hints for a while, none of which really add up to anything solid. I’d love to see a Palm UMPC, but will be very happy if it’s the Linux based Treo. Thanks for the update.
Nice history of Palm’s early accomplishments. NOW, however, one year without a critical firmware fix and Palm’s early successes seem overshadowed by the terrible design and implementation of the Lifedrive and Treos (since they acquired from Hawkin’s company).
I’m very curious what tomorrow brings, but no matter how well Mr. H. might have thought this one through if he’s relying on the present team at Palm to back him up it’s probably dead-on-arrival.
Palm has lost their way and need new blood.
Ahh, y’all need to quit yer whining about the ridiculous problems us 700P uses have been plagued with since last May. After going through 9 Treo 650’s , i am now on my 2nd 700P. When i last spoke with the Executive Escalations department in KC, I explained to them the tons of dropped calls (with a full signal), the joke of the BT implementation, the inability to sync on a Mac or Pc at random intervals, and the 3 minute reboot after the Treo crashes when a text message comes in, etc.
I explained that I paid $600.00 for my 650 and it took 9 months to get my rebate !(unacceptable.) When they finally upgraded me to a 700P for all of my frustrations and lost work, I got charged $150.00 for it. Now, having been through this before I know of two things that will help everyone if the ROM update does not fix the issues, or if something else breaks. I told the rep I will not be paying Sprint a penny more , especially considering I already pay them 7.00/month for insurance.
First, you contact the # in Kansas City for the Executive Escalations Dept. Usually they will transfer you to someone who will try to help you. However, not always. Sometimes you need to give it two to three days after the initial call and call back again and speak with another “higher up.” You will then get some satisfaction, usually.
Lastly, if all else fails, the following is how you get Sprint/Palm and the FCC’s attention: File a clearly written complaint with the BBB online. I have had to do this three times and I have received a call back from a manager within a week every time.
Last, last comment, is that most people don’t know this but most US Credit cards (gold and platinum) have a clause for “lemon” products. Bottom line, if Sprint or Palm will not give you satisfaction, call your CC company and request that the charge be reversed since the product is defective.
Thanks for listening, and I guarantee you that if the BBB receives enough complaints, that Palm or Sprint will have PR problems. I just hope they finally fix the issues on the 700, so i can stop pulling my hair out !

Wow… this new device is more like an accessory to your mobile phone… the Palm Foleo.
Underwhelmed is an understatement.
Basically, it is a device that uses your phone’s as a modem to connect to the net. Has a keyboard… not sure if connection is via bluetooth or wire. hope it has wifi.
First… who would buy this? Another device to carry.
Second…most people can’t even use their cellphone besides making a call, and they will buy this?
Third… the people who are techno-savy enough to use this thing, would rather get an all-in-one device like the new HTC units.
Underwhelmed…
Wow! They created the Treo to be a converged device now they are creating another device to make the Treo not converged? Ummm what? This better be some pretty special hardware because the concept is lacking.
Whoopee - how about fixing the firmware and software problems with CURRENT products? The TREO680 is the most buggy PDA PALM ever released and is considered by many as a downgrade to the 650 - yet despite the number of posts on this site (and others) there is no sign of a fix in the works. Are they taking their product support guidance from Redmond????
It’s “tomorrow,” already. Where is the coverage of the “major announcement?”
Oh, well, yet another major letdown from Palm.
It’s here! Who’ll be the first?

What a bummer!!!! BIG DEAL PALM, a bigger screen and keyboard, well and wi-fi…all for 599.00!!! -100.0 mail-in rebate, so 499.00…NO THANKS!!! i don’t need a keyboard and a 10″ screen for my already equipped Treo!!! not for 500.00!!!! so what if it has wi-fi and bluetooth (supposedly, it does) still not enough for my 500.00, what a shame!! though it was going to be a major announcement, with internal storage, sd or similar capabilities etc, and no support for 3rd party apps?????? c’mon….you can do better, this just didn’t make sense at all….if you have a laptop and a treo, you’d never buy this, and since you can get a laptop with wi-fi and bluetoothand support for all apps that run under win for 499.00 these days, why would anyone buy this??? certainly not because it’s slight ly smaller than a feature packed laptop for the same price….man I’m bummed!!!! I was hoping for something really cool and a major “new” type of palm device, like a lifedrive type of device, but with all the bugs the life drive had…but fixed..no thanks palm!!! just release the damn 700p updates we were promised this week….maybe time to look at another platform, there are alot of cool things out there for 499.00!!!!
Faslane
I got a little chuckle out of this line:
“We believe ultra-portable PCs are going to become a tremendously popular product class because desktop-equivalent processors and mega memory can now be incorporated into tiny form factors”
I already own an ultra-portable PC, my Treo 650; that is if you compare it to my first computer which was also “portable”.
In 1983 or so, for about $3000, I bought a Kaypro 10, which was a “portable” computer. The “10″ stood for the massive 10 megabyte harddrive, and it was portable because it was all one piece, and had a handle on it. I believe it weighed about 30 pounds. The screen was about 6×6 inches, green letters, and “graphics” were :-) and “>0<”. That last one was the X-Wing Fighter in some “Star Wars” game.
I believe the built in modem was 300 or 600 baud, and the internet - well, it didn’t exist.
WordStar was the word processor of choice, though it came with two others. IBM was just coming out with a new portable that used a new operating system provided by some unknown company named Microsoft. It was called PC-DOS. My machine used CP/M that fully utilized the 64 kilobytes of RAM that came on board.
Compare that to the truly portable computer that I now carry on my belt. It weighs 6.1 oz, has a color screen that isn’t much smaller than my Kaypro; the RAM is over 100 times more, the “harddrive” is over 200 times larger, internet connection speeds - well, vary, but at a magnitude much greater than the text only modem. Throw in a telephone that I can use in more places than I’ve ever been able to before, and at much higher quality, a decent camera, music player, instant messaging, games, books, atomic clock, voice recorder, and all the organizational tools available - by comparison, I’m carrying a Mega Device, far exceeding the “desk-top equivelants” of not even ten years ago.
So, to the whiners who paid $600 for their Mega Device, and are unhappy, I really can’t walk that road with you.
Sure, you don’t have a perfect device. You probably never will; there will always be a newer, smaller, faster, better, more exciting, technology. And I can’t wait to see it, to own it, and to use it.
could it be the palm foleo???
I’m going to have to agree with faslane that the Foleo is going to be a non-starter. Why I won’t buy this: for about $900 I can get a fully functional, small, laptop computer. To connect it to my Treo only requires a program like mDesk or PdaReach.
Why someone would buy this: to divorce themselves from a desktop or laptop, and go Treo-only. I wonder if there are that many people wanting to do that.
What Treo should be concentrating on: a new version of their OS that kicks Windows back to the curb, and an updated form factor that will allow for Treo devices to have larger screens, larger keyboards, and real handwriting recognition.
could it be the palm foleo???
HarryJ cracked me up!
The last time I heard about all the dropped calls with a full signal, it turned out to be her earring tapping the touchscreen during a call.
Disable the touchscreen, dude.
so…… WTF is the Foleo? What OS does it run? What does it do? Why should I buy one? What makes it different from my Apple eMate 300?

I like the Foleo. I think it’s a great idea. The price is high for what it does, but I do hope it will go down soon.
I think the essential point is that it needs to work with a smartphone seamlessly. It should be thought of as an extension to your existing smartphone, so it’s really a product for smartphone users — who are also carrying their smartphone at the same time. You can put it in a (small) bag and take it out whenever you want to use a large keyboard and screen.
I think the Foleo will become more and more compelling as smartphones become more powerful (with more memory and faster CPUs), since keyboard and screen size will always be a major limitation of smartphones.

I personally would need a FANTASTIC reason to buy ANYTHING Palm ever again… Have a brand new 680 and thinking of throwing it in the garbage and buying a Blackberry…they WORK!
Hi Guys
A Given
This is not a thing for everyone
I had really hoped it would replace my Treo 650 entirley
ie have voice and a sim card connectivity (GSM)
I know you can work with excel on a treo but with what a Microsope to see the bigger picture.
GSM connectivity will probably come in wave 2 of this device
Oh Well here comes my treo 680 upgrade while I wait a year for version 2.
Remember umpc are also just as dumb (yeah maybe the are running winXP) but I think ol “Hawk” realises this version is a pilot to see what people want and where it will go
There is also a lot of battery development going on
Imagine skype, cell fone connectivity and calls on this device and you could run it entirely independent from your treo and your desktop ???
I think this is part of a developmental stage
I mean look
pilot - palm - visor - handspring - treo 180 + 270 + 600 +650 then most successful 680
Took a bit of a run up to get it rite !!!!
Maybe that is what this is !!!
a run up to find the right mix !!!
Cheers before somebody shoots me
It would be nice to see them build in EVDO. I’ve never been a fan of internet over bluetooth (or having to locate a wifi node).
