Unstrung is reporting that a deal for rival cell phone manufacturer Nokia to buy out Palm may be in the final stretch. According to the technology website, the deal could happen as early as Thursday this week at more than $20 per share.

Recently the Wall Street Journal reported that Palm engaged Morgan Stanley to advise the company about options for its strategic sale. Unstrung indicated that Morgan Stanley is pressing for a deal to be wrapped up before Palm reports its third quarter results this week.

The four leading bidders are rumored to be two private equity firms and two rival gadget manufacturers. Texas Pacific Group, Silver Lake Partners, Nokia and Motorola are likely contenders.

I think it odd that they are making more sales all the time and want to sell....
They should be doing the buyout of someone else...
Nokia at least made some bombproof phones...
Original cell I had was the 5160 and it survived a few 50 km an hour bike crashes cliped on my shoulder, and bouncing down the road.....

Palm has mismanaged their great creativity
and their company for years.

This is evidenced by a current class-action
lawsuit against them for allegedly violating
California laws that require improvement
of known defects.

I believe that a buyout is in their best
interests and strongly indicated because
of very poor management.

I personally have had a Treo 600, Treo 650
and Treo 700p. My boss has had two
Treo 600's and a Treo 700w.

All these devices have had major issues.

We are computer experts and would not
say this if we did not know.

Currently I have monthly insurance on
a Treo 700p so that when it fails, I will
get a replacement WITHOUT QUESTION
and not be left high and dry.

I would recommend Motorola or Nokia
and know that the result would be
a better company to manage
the complexities of such
a device.

Still, I expect Jeff Hawkins to spin off
new companies for future Palm-like
devices because I think there is a misguided
idea in Silicon Valley that you can't
innovate for a large company.

If the treos were such junk, and you are a computer expert, why did you keep buying more?
