1-2-3 Guide to Installing Treo Software Over the Air (OTA)

“Hey Sean, check this new app out on my Treo”

“Man that is hot, where & how did you get that?”

“No problemo man, let me show you how easy it is.”

Downloading applications wirelessly is fast and easy. With mytreo.net’s download section, there is no need to hassle with downloading to your computer, unzipping, adding to your Palm desktop, and finally syncing to your Treo. Just visit the mytreo.net/download section in Blazer, choose the application you want, click on the PRC link, and et voila!

However, in case you have never done a wireless install before, here are step by step instructions.

Start by locating the “Web” icon in your Palm operating system. To do this, press the button on your phone with the picture of a house on it to view the Palm operating system, and then in the top right hand corner of the screen, choose “Main” (or “All” to show all your applications). Then press ‘W’ to go directly to your applications that start with the letter ‘W.’ Tapping the “Web” icon will begin your journey onto the Internet.

I should pause here and remind you that your phone company may charge you to use the internet. Users with unlimted data plans don’t need to worry. But if you are paying your service provider by the megabyte, you may want to surf the internet sparingly.

The next screen will probably be a reminder that you will now be connecting to the Internet and using your data. Some of you may have already chosen to skip this reminder by checking the, “Never ask me again” box. I would recommend that limited data users leave this intact. In the inadvertent tap of the Web icon, you will be reminded right away, instead of finding out one month later in the form of a bill.

Your phone should now load up your home page. (It IS set to mytreo.net, isn’t it?) It may take a moment for the page to load depending on your connection speed. Wait for the “Receiving” to stop and you are ready to continue.

Since mytreo.net is uniquely formatted for mobile use it will load rather quickly. Scroll down and tap on “login” if this is your first mobile visit. If you are new to mtdn, please take a moment to register.

Registration is required to access our downloads or post in the forums:

Tap on Treo Downloads to be taken to the software download page. The download section has been divided into both Palm and Windows OS formats. Within each format, programs are divided by category. How simple is that?

OTAimage013.jpg

Let’s find that software that Sean was so fond of. Scroll down to Games and tap there. We are looking for Thumbscan 1.0.6, which will be found on Page 2. When you have found it move on to the next section.

OTAimage016.jpg

Here is what you should see (above).

Tap on the name of the file.

This will take you to the program description and usually a snapshot of the application.

OTAimage018.jpg

In this screen above you will find two different options for downloading. If you were going to download to your computer, you should download the ZIP so that you have all the documentation that goes with the application. However, when downloading directly to your Treo you only need the PRC file. Tap on the PRC file to begin your download.

OTAimage020.jpg

After a short pause (while the program is preparing to download) you will see this screen. Here you can decide if you would like to save the program to your SD card or directly to RAM (internal memory). Pick your “Save to:” location then tap on “Yes”.

Most games can be stored on and run from your SD card.

OTAimage022.jpg

This is the screen that shows the file ready to download into your Treo.

Tap on “Save” to continue.

OTAimage025.jpg

The last step in grabbing this (or any program) is to accept it into the phone. Tap on “Yes” and you are finished!

OTAimage027.jpg

This is what the program icon looks like after it has been installed on my phone. As you can see I have not placed it into any category in the phone, hence, the “Unfiled” location. Tap on the icon to run the program.

The next time that you “Hotsync” your phone, this program will be stored to your computer. This is good to remember since in the event of a hard reset (a process which clears all of the data) the information will still be available for reloading.

That wasn’t that hard, now was it? I hope that I have provided you with a simple method of downloading software, “Over the Air,” to your device. Mytreo.net has a large variety of freeware (free) and shareware (distribution is free, but continued use has a fee) for your enjoyment. Remember, if you like a shareware program, please support the developer by purchasing the program in our store.

  1. Since this is a tutorial for OTA, please get rid of the imaginary conversation at the beginning.
If the app. is already on one treo, it can be ‘beamed’ to the other, or if it is on the SD card just switch cards and copy the app. to the other phone. This way you don’t have to worry about interrupting the download by losing a signal in a building or elevator.
So, you see now that this conversation at the beginning doesn’t really make sense, unless you add to it by saying “let me show you a great site where they offer many other apps/games/system software to download”
And , in the first paragraph, we know that we are using Palm platform Treos because of the PRC link, therefore no reason to go to the site OTA to get WIN platform software.

  2. The .zip file can be downloaded directly to your treo if you use the freeware program HandZipperLite. It is available here http://mytreo.net/downloads/details-226.html in the MTDN downloads section.
If you have a limited data plan, the .zip files are generally smaller so they eat up less of your data allotment.

  3. Thanks for the “How to”. I’ve been using your site for quite some time now, but I never realized why you had two different types of downloads. I will definitely be downloading more programs now, using the convenience of “on the go” downloading. Thanks!

  4. Im trying to install TCPMP via my treo 650, but I’m guessing that the PRC for the Palm OS version is not available as I am only seeing the ZIP file. If there is a PRC of the current TCPMP, please to send me a message with the link to it. Other than that, I love DLing things with my Treo onto my Treo from MyTreo..=D

  5. This is excellent. I’m new to this and have been seeking this information. I had already found it, but it still comes in handy.

  6. Hopefully it allows you to download without the annoyance of logging in each time like the website (if you don’t keep cookies hanging around). I’m looking forward to checking mytreo.net’s method through Blazer !

  7. Thank you for those directions, they are PERFECT, especially for those who aren’t computer or Treo savvy….

  8. um I’m new also just wonderin is the 2mb limit changeable? it won’t let me download any bigger files

  9. i’m also new to Treo 650, i’ve had the same question: if the download only has a zip file instead of a prc.file, & I do have hand zipper lite. When you download it to hand zipper & unzip it shouldn’t it pop up as an icon automatically on the Treo? My reason for asking is because: I’ve done that & can’t find it either on hand zipper or my sd card. What am I doing wrong. But everything else is very useful.

  10. have been surfing to try to resolve my issues with treo. i have been using handyzip lite for some time now and was wondering if there was a way to locate zip files on internal memory. FileZ cannot find the file but i know its there because my internal shows it has been reduced by the size of zip file i inadvertedly downloaded to internal memory instead of sd card. please help

  11. I am looking for help with hotsinc. But read all interest post, thanks
