Welcome to our new occasional series of AILTS - Apps I'd Like To See. In this edition we'll be talking about "Cell Weather".

This would be a new application for the Treo Smartphone that would use cellular towers to determine your location and then download the current weather forecast for your area. The application could be set to update itself automatically at a preset time or at intervals.

What would be the point of such a program? I thought of this program because I am a truck driver, more specifically a team truck driver, so the truck isn't in the same town, much less same state when I wake up. This application would also work well for frequent travellers. With this application you wouldn't have to worry about inputing an address or finding a zip code or waiting for Blazer to load.

Well what about privacy issues? Anyone heard of e911? Your Treo already has location tracking capabilities. Why not use those capabilities for our own good?

This has been another episode of Apps I'd Like To See (AILTS). As always the program mentioned in the above article does not exist, yet. It is my hopes that some talented programer(s) will take my idea and make it come to life.

I'd like to see an app that provides a bigger and clearer indication of signal strength. Then I can map the towers as I drive along to find the weak parts.

On my old Nokia phone, if I activated the "phone tools" service menu on the phone, I was able to show the details of the cell tower which I was currently 'conversing' with, including the Long/Lat of said tower. Triangulation would be sweet and all but just using the long/lat of the current cell tower you're talking to would be just about as much detail as you'd need for something as general as weather.

Here are some more:

- a KAR file player that can play MIDI Karaoke files. With its nice loud speaker, the Treo would make a brilliant mini Karaoke machine

- a sound level meter for testing noise levels or fire alarms

- an optical distance meter: Stick a Post-It on a wall. Put the Treo flat face down on the opposite wall and trigger a picture. It should be able to calculate the distance from the size of the Post-It

I've developed an app I think you'd like to see. It's in beta testing now and I'm looking for more testers. Email betatest (at) righthandsoftware (dot) com if you're interested in trying it out.
