Treo Nitro & Lennon Rumors Surface

Our good friends at Engadget are reporting that Cingular will release two new Treo smartphones in October, code named Nitro & Lennon. If correct, this would represent the first significant evolution of the Treo form factor since the Treo 600 debuted in 2003.

Neither device appears to have an external antenna. The Lennon is listed as having UMTS and Class 10 EDGE, a 1.3 mega pixel digital camera, WiFi (built-in?), and Windows Mobile 5.0 with MSFP. The Nitro is shown to have a 1.3 mega pixel digital camera and Palm OS.

Is this rumor true? We find the outdated “PalmOne” reference in the image suspicious, and would point out that Engadget has been right and wrong before. On the other hand, Palm has stated expressly that it will bring two new models to market in the second half of this year. Palm launched the Treo 700w and Treo 700p in CDMA, and the company generally follows its CDMA devices with GSM versions. So it’s reasonable to believe Cingular is planning for such a release. Whether the new devices will have WiFi and be without antennas is an interesting question indeed.

  1. The strange thing is that one of the models is labeled PalmOne. Maybe this is a somewhat older roadmap?

  2. If I upgrade from the Treo 600 to the 650 what investments will be lost in the process (e.g. programs, headphones, cases, etc.)?

  3. I saw these rumors over the weekend and went into my local Cingular store in Denver. The guy there said internally they are being told they’re getting one or two new palms in October (this was without prompting about the rumor) and that he’d heard talk of the windows OS (for 1). He hadn’t heard about the lack of antenna or the slimmer size. He said that Cingular would announce it 3 weeks ahead of the release, so some time in September. He seemed pretty sure - for what that’s worth. I asked about the price - he didn’t know - but guessimated it to be around $500 given that’s what the 650 started at.

  4. I can’t believe they’d come out with a new palm os-based treo so soon after the release of the 700p. Unless they make the change in conjunction with the gsm version.

  5. About time. The very small improvements from the 600 to 650 have been dissapointing to say the least.

The Range of Pocket PC’s is starting to become a major temptation. I have the same feeling that I had when I made the inevitable switch from Netscape to IE.

If you go to a Windows OS I think there are better devices than the TREO.

  6. I think I’ll just wait for the treo 750, or 800. I’m sure either will be much better than the 700. Treo’s are addictive which is why everyone always wants the newest version available, but you have to considers associated costs, especially with 3 kids 2 dogs and 2 cats to feed :-)

  7. It would be nice to have GPS come ready with the Treo, instead of having to buy a separate GPS unit for like a navigation system. If they can stick it in the Razor…why not a Treo?

  8. I wish they upgrade the CPU too. The Dictaphone should be builtin. And the Current Builtin Camera Application sucks when it Creates videos with all the blockiness and tackiness that’s surprising with 3GP. Audio/Video Codecs needs an overhaul. PalmOS is significantly better than the WIN version. They should upgrade internal memory to 128MB. So Many Applications work from the Main memory only. Lastly, “Factory Installed” Agendus Pro would be the final “WOW” Factor. After All this, keeping the price same as a 650 - Then I’ll think of upgrading without a second thought. BTW, if they do the above, there’s more to do; but YES - then the Nitro will truly skyrocket PalmOne’s Sales
