$150 for a “working condition” Treo 650 - hope they interpret *that* more widely than their “warranty” that claims defective keyboards as “user damage” requiring upwards of $175-200 to mitigate. They ‘got enough “wiggle room” in that phrase to never pay a penny to the unlucky Treo 650 owners going for this deal. It’s even through a third-party company!
Most Sprint users may not know this - but Sprint allegedly *changed* their manufacturer warranty coverage back in 11/05: they are demanding their CUSTOMERS have to pay them $55.00 for EVERY *in-warranty* hardware replacement! At that price, just a year of owning Treo 600’s would have cost me about $385.00 (on top of the lost productivity and time) for making the “manufacturer” stand behind their product through the line of 7 defective Treo 600’s and refurbs I endured before giving up and buying a Treo 650 out-of-pocket.
$150.00 for dumping a “working condition” (but non-working) $600.00 phone that presently sells for about $300 on fleabay, eh? *AND* it needs to be purchased through your store, too! P.T Barnam is rolling over in his grave for not being alive to think up this one.
Their game is to apparently blame the user for *anything* that doesn’t work - ie: “it is assumed to have been dropped.” I’m no physicist, but how do you “drop” a phone and manage to create absolutely no scratches or other damage beyond a single key malfunctioning in the middle of the keyboard? They played this same game with the Tungsten 3 owners who had screws falling out of their devices within weeks - then demanding $125 (!$!$!) to address the issue created by their inability to properly apply Loctite to four 2 cent screws.
Geez, Palm, I’m touched by your generousity. How about just standing behind the hardware you build instead? $649.00 for a phone - *AND* anything that wasn’t built to last a year “isn’t under warranty”?!?
================
Step 1: Build hardware with inherent defects and “warranty” it for a year.
Step 2: Customer encounters obvious defects normally covered under warranty, applies for warranty assistance.
Step 3: Palm says “user created” the hardware defect, wants $179+ to fix (hopefully).
Step 4: PROFIT!!!! (for Palm).
*VERIZON CUSTOMERS NOTE*
With all due respect to MTDN, the Verizon phone is already available online from VeriZon (no not 3-4 weeks from Palm). Also, the prices quoted in the listing for VeriZon are not completely correct in all cases either. In particular, the $619 quoted here is a “Non-Contract” price, BUT- Existing customers CAN receive the SAME new contract price (+/-$399 for 2yr), IF they are eligible for an equipment upgrade. 1 year contracts are eligible every 10 months, 2 year contracts are eligible every 22 months. If you have had your current product for a year however, even under a 2 year contract, you may still be eligible for an upgrade under special circumstances. This means if you were early getting your 650, you will likely be eligible for the same $399 2 year price. If you didn’t purchase anything for 24 months and have NE2 (new every 2) $100 discount, it may apply as well. Caveat: Most VZW dealers will NOT allow special discounts AND NE2 at the same time. This is also the case with online ordering. BUT because the 700p is so new, do not trust the website to accurately notate your status for an upgrade, call and they WILL match the online offer (stores should if you print the listing).
I would imagine (and hope) that our friends at Sprint will offer much the same plans.
I called sprint’s online marketing dept directly today, and asked when I would be able to upgrade. Sprint will be selling it directly on tuesday, for anyone who cares. I personally will have to buy it form sprint, as I want to sign up for the Sero plan.
