ProClip Car Mount for the Treo

I was very excited to finally get on board and buy a gps to use with my Treo 650. I got a great little gps that I can throw in the glove box and still receive a signal, but where to put my Treo 650 was another matter. I looked at a few generic device holders that clip onto the air vents and decided that just wasn’t an option. First of all, those holders don’t always hold so well, and second of all, in the kind of heat we experience in the deep south, blocking an air vent just wasn’t sensible.

ProClip car mount to the rescue!

ProClip has designed a system that is customized not only to your device, but to your vehicle. No screws are necessary, and if you decide to remove the ProClip mount, nobody will ever know it was there. It took me about 3 minutes to install the mount with the included “gap” tool. Wedge the gap tool into the space between the radio and the dash, insert the mount, and voila! It doesn’t get any easier than this.

ProClip holder with tilt swivel

I got the holder with tilt swivel. This could be important for many reasons. If the sun is hitting you in just the wrong spot, you can tilt your Treo out of the glare, and if you’re driving with a passenger who might like to follow the route on your gps, it can swivel far enough for her/him to see.

The fit for my Treo 650 was absolutely perfect, and ProClip makes holders for every model in the Treo family. It slides in from the top, leaving plenty of room for your charger and earbud. Nothing short of rolling your car over could dislodge your Treo.

The only negative about the ProClip experience is that you can’t leave your Treo in a case to use the holder. This is probably not even a major consideration, because if you need to use the gps, you’re probably going to be in your vehicle for awhile, and won’t mind removing/replacing your Treo from its case.

I highly recommend this for anyone who needs to use their Treo in the car, whether for gps navigation, mp3s, notes, or any of the 1,000 other uses your Treo has.

  1. Also check with Bracketron and Panavise, both are makers of sturdy metal brackets for this type of holder (AMPS-compatible). They have custom brackets to fit most cars.

  2. I’ll second the endorsement for the ProClip. I’ve been using it every day for six months now for phone (handsfree via stereo) and GPS use, and aside from needing a tighten now and then (at the swivel mount) it has been sturdy and unobtrusive. The Treo doesn’t budge even in my car (a Mitsu Evo - very stiff suspension) and that is pretty impressive.

The only con is the price. But the two pieces combine to make a holder that is tailored exactly to your car and phone. There’s no comparison to a generic mount.

  3. I’ve using proclips since my Treo 600 and luckily the old 600 mounts work fine with the 650! ;) It’s a great and simple solution, although a bit pricey, to mount your Treo in your cars…

  4. I purchased the ProClip system about two weeks ago for my Nissan Murano. I had tried about four other generic vent, drink holder, sucktion cup devices before the ProClip. None of them worked and I would not risk my $500 Treo to any of them. The ProClip is just great. Fits my car perfect and that phone is not going anywhere. Considering how much the Treo costs, the higher price for the ProClip is worth it.
    Thanks,

  5. there was a mention of a gps system for the treo 650, can i get a recomendation or a direction on one. been looking and not much luck. please fwd informaton to email address listed

  6. Hey Rich — If you’re still looking for GPS for use w/ the treo 650… I’d recommend taking a look at the tom tom gps software… I originally got the bluetooth gps + zire 72 bundle, but the s/w works on the treo 650 w/out a hitch. The only downside, is you can’t use the phone and gps at the same time, and if you answer a call, you’ll have to ‘re-plot’ your route (easy, but a hassle)

  7. I am weary about trying this solution, even though it looks to be the best. How can there be no residual damage when you are wedging a piece in-between two panels. If you remove it later, surely there is some damage. In the least there is a widening of the gap, right?

  8. I’ve had my ProClip for my Treo 650 in my 01 Maxima for several months now and recently had to pull the dash apart to replace a burned out bulb in the digital HVAC unit (incidentally, the dealership told me the bulbs were not servicable and that I had to replace the whole unit at a cost of $500 CDN plus labour. I went to the parts counter, ordered the bulbs at a cost of $6 each, and spent 25 minutes on the whole job).

Anyway, when I removed the ProClip from the dash, you could see a sligh gap from where the clip had been sitting. By the time I put the dash back together and went to reinstall the ProClip, the soft dash material had sort of spread back into place. The car was out in the sun a bit, so the warmth may have helped a bit.

    Hope that helps.
